Robinson on #1
Mt. Hope, ON - The 2nd playing of the Pro/Junior Golf Classic at Southern Pines G&CC in Mt. Hope ON was an interesting day in more ways then one. With a unique quota point scoring format in place, a challenging excutive length layout, and GHT professionals being paired with Hamilton/Halton Junior Golf Tour players, it was a day that lined up for fun and drama. Starting the day in the first time was Matt Robinson (Heron Point) who needed a win or tie for first at the very least to capture a spot in the upcoming playoffs for the John H. Davis Cup. Robinson made 5 birdies, 4 of them coming on the back nine, and only 2 bogeys to accumulate 43 points and hold the clubhouse lead. However, Fraser McIntyre (Trafalgar G&CC) made the 9 hole turn with 27 points which featured 1 eagle, 2birdies and was seemingly well on his way to lapping the field. But, a birdieless back nine left him with a total of 43 points and finished tied for first with Robinson....
Dan Greenwood (Heron Point) made a good run at the lead but fell short by 2 points with 41 and finished tied for third with Jim Kenesky (Tees Indoor Golf) and Brett Walker (Hidden Lake G&CC). Other notable players were Ed Maunder (Deer Field) 6th with 40 points, Yong Woo Kim (Golf Town Burlington) Tied 8th 38 points. The highest point total of the day came from Junior player Nic Ross who accumulated 49 points. His round was highlighted by 5 birdies and 1 eagle and was a runaway winner in the junior division.
In the Wick Agencies 2012 Order of Merit and Race to the John H. Davis Cup, Matt Robinson made the biggest move up the Order of Merit and solidified a playoff spot at his home course on August 27th. Mike Millar (Glendale G&CC) was holding on to the final spot but finished just outside the playoff line finishing in 17th spot. Mark Napier (Glen Abbey) slipped a little but still held on to land in the 16th spot and still has an outside chance to make a run at the final eight spots that will play for the John H. Davis Cup on October 9th at Glencairn Golf Club in Milton ON. Ed Maunder regains the top spot with 93.33 points and is yet to find the winners circle this season on the GHT. Yong Woo Kim is in second with 90.4 points and Fraser McIntyre now moves closer to the lead with 89 points.
Fraser McIntyre captures the Wick Agencies 2012 Senior Order of Merit and is now poised to become both Senior and Regular Order of Merit winner. Brian Hutton (Southbrook G&CC) finishes second with 41 points.
Stephen Marshall and Nic Ross were the low team with 84 points and will have their names engraved on the Paul Jamieson Memorial Trophy.
Thank you to all the players that made the day so special for all the Juniors and the GHT would like to Thank Doug Millar and the staff at Southern Pines for being such gracious hosts. Without their support the event would never have been as organized as it was. The next event on the GHT schedule is set for Monday August 27th at Heron Point Golf Links in Ancaster ON. This event will be the first round of the playoffs but will still feature a full field for all GHT members.
